Leopard print, Lagerfeld, and luxury aren’t the the first things that come to most people’s minds when they think of a baseball cap, but things have started to change. In 1996, when Spike Lee first asked New Era to make him a red custom Yankees fitted, it began to usher the New Era brand outside the realm of being just another “sportswear company.” This opened the doors to many different styles and designs of New Era caps being produced, featuring everything from countless custom color combinations of professional and college sports teams, to comic/cartoon characters, and streetwear brands. Recently, a new cap trend has started to emerge: the high-end couture New Era cap. The baseball cap has made its way from the field to the streets, and now to the catwalk.
We took a glance back at 2013 and compiled what we believe to be the top 20 New Era Cap releases of the year. We must be upfront we’ve been choppin’ hats since 07′ and we truthfully believe that some of the best releases we’ve ever seen were created in 2013. Up until the release of this article we were battling back and forth about what would make the list and what rank to position every cap. It was only inevitable that some great releases and collections didn’t make the cut but all in all we know that you will relate to our curated selection. This years end wrap up presents some of the most popular caps we feel were released and judged mostly by rarity, originality, popularity, availability and sellout status. We figure that we wouldn’t justify our picks and leave it to your imagination to review and gather your opinions. Our final words on this: “All we can do is hope that 2014 can stand up strong to yesteryear and top, one of the strongest years the hat game has ever seen.”
At NecTalk, we know there are die-hard female New Era cap collectors and enthusiasts out there who love, wear and show off their hats. However, it cannot be denied that the baseball cap – fitted or snapback – is a headwear accessory worn far more by men than women. We live in an era in which boundaries in fashion have been blurred and the rules and stereotypes for how a man or a woman should dress in society are no longer being followed as strictly as they once were. This can be seen in pop culture, music, clothing stores and in the streets, which has got us wondering: why do we still not see many women wearing baseball caps? Perhaps women feel that caps are a sports/fashion accessory associated with being worn predominantly by male athletes and young men. Or maybe there aren’t enough caps to appeal to women’s tastes? Or is it possible women prefer other styles of hats to the baseball cap? We aren’t exactly sure, but being that we are the #1 leading New Era-related cap community in the world, we would love to see more women wearing caps and by the end of this article, we hope that we will have inspired some of you, too!

Flash Back: We dug deep to give you a comprehensive look at 2012’s TOP 20 New Era CAP releases. A year in review is always a crucial thing in any industry. The reason why I love top 5,10,20’s of anything is because it gives a benchmark to see where my fitted and or snapback (we don’t discriminate) game is at. So on behalf of the whole Nectalk team I’ve rounded up some favorite New Era caps of 2012 and narrowed it down to a TOP 20. After looking through a couple thousand posts 2012 featured some great releases in comparison to 2011 (see 2011 picks here). Hope 2013 brings some great releases to the table. I’m really hoping for custom NFL colorways!! See which cap made it to number #ONE in 2012….
