PHASE 2: MADLEN – MANAGER FROM GERMANY, BERLIN INTERVIEW
What attracted you to a career with New Era? I was attracted by the uniqueness and individuality of the New Era Flagship store and the products that we offer; as a brand we have a real sense of authenticity and have stayed true to our roots, as a family owned business.
For those who don’t know – how long has the London Soho Flagship been around? We first opened our doors in September 2008.
Describe your store to us, what sets it apart from other New Era Flagship stores? We have a large store of 200qm spread across 2 floors, with a large selection of amazing products. Our staff take great pride in the store…We like to feel that our team are friendly and helpful :)
Which caps are the most popular in your store? NBA 9FIFTY Snapbacks, Berlin 9FIFTY Snapbacks, ‘Sorry I’m Fresh’ 59FIFTY and timeless classics such as MLB Basics and Authentics.
Tell us about your personal collection. – How many caps? In your opinion what are your favorite New Era releases of all time? I have collection of around 100 Caps, a lot of Lifestyle and Non-Licensed Caps in many different colourways. I really liked the Capture The Flag collection – it proved very popular here in Berlin.
Tell us about your regular customers – do you have any ‘super fans’ that visit your store? We’re lucky to have lots of super fans here in Berlin and we’re really well connected to them…some have 200 – 300 and 500+ Caps. You can see some of their collections on the New Era Europe Facebook page. Most of them visit the store at least once a month.
What’s your most memorable experience working at your store? I’ll always remember our store opening and also my first company meeting in Paris.
All New Era Flagship stores order their own exclusive custom products – are there any particular exclusives that our fans should know about? Our 9FIFTY and 59FIFTY Chicago Bulls specials always sell fast, the same as 59FIFTY Detroit Red Wings, especially the Melton fabric ones; also our Punisher, Thundercats and the Tazmanian Devil character styles.
Have there been any worthwhile mentions or any surprise visits at the store? The most surprising visit was from Jamie Lee Curtis; she bought some presents here for her son. She was really friendly and down to earth.
Can New Era Fans See Old Exclusive Hats Back Into Today’s Flagship stores and Online Specials? This depends very much on the style and kind of release – many of our Flagship store Specials are limited edition pieces (no re-runs). Some of our popular Flagship custom products, such as Sorry I’m Fresh or Music Note do return from time to time, in new colourways. Whilst we like to offer choice we also recognize that our fans like to find exclusive product in our stores that they can’t find anywhere else.
How are New Era Exclusive Hats Born Into The Company From Your Personal Experience? We usually choose our Flagship store customs based on a combination of our own, personal judgement and customer feedback – we like to offer our customers what they want, when we can.
