When did you start taking interest in New Era hats?
Haha, as a kid I saw Ice Cube in a New Era fitted, and I thought it was so cool.
I had never seen a hat like that before. I didn’t know what they were called but I remember the flag on the side and really wanted one. So at a White Sox game I see a guy selling New Eras and I begged my mom to take me over there. Saw an awesome red and blue 3-D Sox, bought it, and have been hooked ever since.
How many pieces in total are you at?
93 and I got a few in the mail right now.
What are some of your favorite places to shop?
I really need to get up to the Flagship store in Chicago, but Lids is the only place close to me. Online is probably myfitteds.com drjays.com or New Era’s site.
Dionic Designs Fire Ant 59Fifty fitted hat was it what you expected?
I was blown away. Awesome colors and a really cool design. Almost every time I wear it out, someone asks me what team it is, haha.
You’re one of the first collectors we interview with a wide amount of New Era snapbacks. What’s your take on the snapback vs. fitted debate?
I bought a bunch of fitteds a few years back that were sized wrong or I outgrew so I got into snapbacks. Then a friend sent me a fitted and I fell in love again. At the end of the day there are some cool snapbacks out there, but it seems to be a trend. If I find one I like, I buy it. I will say a lot more heart and soul gets put into a fitted and that’s what I have been going after lately.
We see a lot of Superhero hats, OKC and Chicago Bulls pieces, do you step outside of that realm?
I really don’t buy a hat just because of looks. I think if I did that then one day I would be stuck with a lot of caps that don’t mean much to me. That’s why I collect the ones I do. Everyone has a memory that goes with it or a story behind it. So if it’s a Chicago team (except the Cubs) it’s a must have. If it’s an Oklahoma team it’s a must have. And being on the nerdy side, I like all of the superhero hats that get put out.
Do you ever get out to see any of your favorite teams in action?
Every chance I get! Once a month I try and see the Thunder play. I try to watch the Thunder play the Bulls so that way whoever wins I’ll be happy. And in the summers when I visit my family in Chicago we will always catch a Sox or Hawks game.
What compelled you to go out of your normal selection and scoop up the Anaheim Ducks 20th Anniversary piece?
I love that old school logo. The Ducks were just one of those iconic teams.
Reminds me of being a kid, coming home from school and watching Mighty Ducks animated series. So I’m glad I got the hat, I just wish I had gotten the old jersey colorway.
Since your a Star Wars fan, Dam Campo wants us to ask: Would you ever consider getting the Chewbacca Dog Ear 59Fifty?
I still don’t know… As AMAZING as it is, it’s not my size so I wouldn’t get to wear it. I’ve been keeping my eyes open for the rest of the ones in that series. My goal is to one day find that one and Boba Fett.
Growing up in the 90’s was dope! But which one was the better series in your opinion: Mortal Kombat vs. TMNT?
Man that’s tough, but probably TMNT. I remember watching it at my friends house on VHS. I even had a backpack that looked like a turtle shell. I think it would be cool if New Era came out a hat that looked like a turtle shell.
What are your top three favorite hats?
I love my Dionic Designs hat. It’s a great colorway and the design pops and is really cool and unique. My Bulls Championship hat is definitely a favorite. It means a lot to me because when I was a kid I was lucky enough to see Jordan play during the ’97 season. So this hat brings me way back. I always rock this hat to the Thunder games because my two favorite things are OKC and Marvel superheroes, haha.
Just curious, why the Coca Cola hat?
Down in Oklahoma, and any other Southern state, most people drink more Coke than water. It’s kind of funny, but true. There’s nothing better than an ice cold Coke when it hits 110 in the summer, so I thought it would be a cool cap to have.
If you wanted New Era to put out any one hat what would it be?
Oh, that’s tough. I’ve drawn a lot of designs I think would be cool, and New Era is coming out with more superhero/video game hats that I really like. But a dream I have is for there to be a Star Wars and NBA hat. Have Boba Fett, Chewie, and Han all around the Bulls logo, or Vader and Luke fighting with OKC in the background. That would be sweet!
How do your friends react to your collection?
Haha, most support me and some of them have even helped me add to the collection. Most people I show give me a crazy look though.
Any final words?
Yeah thanks SO much to you guys for this interview. I’m glad there’s a place out there for people who have the same passion as I do. Also a shout out to everyone on Instagram, cool people with awesome collections that inspire me to keep collecting. And finally New Era Caps for everything they put out. From a snap to a fitted, fly your own flag.
