Anyone know what the heck this is? Doesn't seem to exist at mlbcollectors.com

A few photos below and lots more at the Ebay listing page: http://www.ebay.com/itm/112303410544

Probably a mistake, new era didn't supply their hats during the time that they wore black and orange with the cartoon bird, Wilson did, even though new era produced them for the team they used Wilson's design and patterns. They never wore new era until around 1978 or 1979 and by then it had the white front panels.

I'm pretty sure your timeline is correct but mlbcollectors.com has a couple NE two-tone 'Happy Bird' caps with their own tags from the early to mid-seventies on their O's page. One's a wool that he doesn't think was worn during the season and the other is an early nylon cap which he thinks might have been a ST prototype. I'm wondering if the solid black cap is another prototype or maybe just an error from the same period.

Very interesting. I love the solid black. I wish they would do the current bird in an all black. Besides the DE BP cap.

I gotta say that while I love the solid black nineties O's cap I think the happy bird loses something in a more conservative design. I'd like to see them make a good poly version of their orange front panels rail for a darker cap option in their set. I'm not a big fan of them wearing the white front panels rail at night and think the O's cap is best left for BP. The orange front panels rail seems to work with both an orange and a black top:

That and the blue/yellow Brewers rail are the only designs that have tempted me to get a DE.

Do you recommend going a size up with the DE's, Scott? And you've had good results lowering Chino DE crowns in the oven, correct?

For the most part, I go with my normal size for DE caps. I did have to go 7 3/4 for one. Fortunately for that one, I was trying it on in person.

I've lowered the crown by wetting it and putting it in the dryer. It works really well and less potential for disaster. A nod to seawolf for the suggestion.
