Yeah, that's the tagging used on early poly. No way that's a 2015 cap.

The equiment rooms at MLB parks are deep and mysterious places. Cannot speak to that particular auction but a player wearing old tagged hats is a possibility.

I know some guys keep their caps as long as possible (there are shots of players still wearing wool in 2010 I think for example) but I figured that was unlikely in this instance since this cap looks to be in great condition. Pretty crazy to think it just sat on a shelf for, what, 7 years? lol

Dbacks are kind of notorious for this, ive spotted some weird stuff looking through their team issued and game used caps. For example, Purple USA wool ACs with white sweatband and 2012-2016 tagging.

I have certainly seen many instances of players wearing caps that were manufactured years before. As Guru mentioned, the equipment room is a mysterious place.

Up until like 2013 there were still grey under-brims for a surprising amount of locker room player "Mug Shots"

I think the Giants finally went to black this past year.

I think those greybunderbrim caps are for two reasons, good contrast for photos- and h think they are Velcro or snapback caps so they have one on hand, and 5 sizes of jerseys, less prep.

Speaking of tags, I'm trying to date these three

This is from a Twins M era on field. Was this before or after the 2009-2011 cool base era?

2007 era hat. Did this tag come before or after the one we see in the OP.

Same with above. Did this come before or after the first white/blue Poly tag?

I know of the first year Poly that we see in the OP and then your cool base. These three I can't quite pin point.

The one in the OP seems most prominent to the first year Poly era. The others seem a touch more rare.

http://mlbcollectors.com is a great site to determine when a cap was worn. They'll have shots of your tags.

Beware of the site using the same photo for different specific years though. I've seen a few discrepancies, although the site is almost 100% correct

These were 2006-2007 I believe . Not sure exactly but they were before the Op if I recall correctly.
