Thanks for those articles, Tony. The mere possibility that the closure is tariff-related is nauseating.

Well with 219 workers being laid off, who were supporting 332 people in the Buffalo headquarters it sounds like they’re waaay to top heavy. Kind of a microcosm of the new socialist America!

I don't want to get too political on here, I agree that sounds top heavy but America is definitely not even close to being socialist. Especially when CEOs make hundreds of times more than their employees on average. Maybe there is some faux socialism out there though...

I hope you don’t end up like what it’s like here in Australia. In the last 20 years we have gone from a country that once manufactured most things to now making nothing. Everything comes from China. The unions definitely don’t help themselves with going on strike about wages. For instance, I once worked in the aluminium industry. We were on a good wage, comparable to a doctor for doing simple non-skilled labouring. We were offered a wage rise of 3%, the normal rise in most industries. But no, the union asked for 30%. This is what was the norm. After this happening too often, guess what? It was cheaper to close shop and move to China. Which they did. And so has every other industry. We once had a long and proud motor industry. No more. We also once had tariffs, but once this stopped and was replaced with fair-trade agreements, thus stopping tariffs completely, every Australian industry closed down. And why not? It’s much cheaper to manufacture overseas. We now have record unemployment, and combining this with record immigration, Australia is now in a worrying stay. I don’t want to get political, that’s not what this forum is for. And I don’t want to get into the whole “is Trump good or not?” thing, but I will give him one thing. At least he seems passionate about keeping jobs in America, and trying to stop them going overseas. I wish previous Australian governments did the same. I hope that you don’t end up in the same situation as we are now in, with most things being made in China, Thailand or South Korea (the last two mainly car imports). I love America, and most of my wife’s family live there. I just don’t want it to end up like Australia. That’s the end of that. Now let’s talk about caps Very Happy

Latest news regarding Derby. Regardless of which side you're on politically, let's hope that Sen. Schumer can work with NE to keep the plant open.

Thanks for the update, Insomniac. The fact that the closure was simply announced and not threatened had me thinking there was no room for political maneuvering to intervene but hopefully I read the situation wrong.

And btw, Hitler and Stalin could be the politicians working keep Derby open and I'd still support their efforts. Razz

Hat Club said that they STILL don’t have the new Marlins caps in, which is a terrible sign in terms of getting anything MUSA. Ordering hats right when they come out was usually the only way you could guarantee that you’re gonna get the first run of MUSA caps. I’m no expert, but from what I’ve seen, they usually make an initial batch of MUSA caps to get them out on the market quickly and then get a bulk order from overseas after that. Considering that it’s been over a week and they still don’t have any product makes me assume that those aren’t going to be made in the US at all.

All of the new Marlins caps on fanatics have a special event marking saying they'll be shipped by December 7th. Not a good sign. I'm staying away.

If Derby closes, my final act in keeping tabs on what New Era is doing is seeing what grotesque curiosities come out of "random Chinese factory 24432-B" bearing the New Era logo, say, five years from now.

I know MLB and Nike still haven't finally the uniform contract for 2020 and beyond, but does anyone know whether New Era and MLB extended their contract beyond 2019 or are they waiting to see what happens with Nike?

Was looking for info and all I found was info on the current contract.

Thx.

Thought I had read in one of the articles on the Derby situation that New Era’s contract runs though 2026, but don’t hold me to that.

I believe New Era recently signed a new deal with MLB within the past year or so. They aren't going away any time soon.

I haven't seen anything on the Derby closure in the last few weeks, but politicians within the local area and state on both sides were still trying to work with New Era to keep the plant open, plus there were protests in front of the NE HQ in Buffalo. Closure still seem imminent, unfortunately. Let's hope the politicians can work a miracle. Doesn't seem likely, though.

I've talked to some folks up there and they don't seem optimistic. Negotiations with New Era are more about severance and finding folks new jobs rather than keeping the plant open. Looks like U.S. made caps are about to become collectors' items.

The Erie County Executive and the WNY AFL-CIO are holding a rally outside of the manufacturing plant this Wednesday.

Derby is indeed, closing.

This is New Era’s statement that was released in response to the rally to save the jobs there.
